SUMMARY:Alex Cole @ The Spinster Sisters
DESCRIPTION:Art opening Tuesday\, December 4th 5-7 PM\nI have been a painter for over 20 years. I received a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. After graduating in 1995\, I continued my painting practice and began to exhibit my work at galleries and art spaces on the East Coast. \nIn 1997\, I moved to Sonoma\, California and continued my painting and began working in art administration and teaching at the Sonoma Community Center. After a few years I became the Fine Arts Director\, hiring nationally known artists to teach workshops and guest lectures. During this time I found my love of teaching. The most inspired time teaching was encouraging artist and non-artista alike to find the fun in letting go\, unplugging and tapping into their creative selves. I now teach workshops in my home studio as well as out in beautiful locations around the Bay Area. I have solo & group shows throughout the year as well as permanent venues that sell my work. My paintings are in private and public collections around the country. The newest addition to my portfolio is a large scale indoor mural at Keller Street CoWork in Petaluma\, CA. \nMy subject matter has changed\, my process has changed but the one constant in my work is the use of mixed media\, layers and my love of color. \nMy landscape paintings has been greatly influenced by my awe of the Northern California landscape around me. The rolling hills of Northern California\, the fog softening the lines of the horizon and creating whispers of brush strokes across the valleys\, the nuisances of each season changing from bright green hills to a beautiful mustard. I paint the memories of these moments. \nI begin my paintings with dark color tones and quick brushstrokes. It’s a playful time for me and warming up time to experiment and be in the moment. I allow the paint to tell me where to go. Allowing drips\, scraping and scratching to create texture and patterns that sometimes only accidents can create. The process is an ebb and ow between adding and subtracting. Always being aware of keeping the energy of the brushstrokes and the energy of the painting moving. \nOn the days that I’m not working in my studio I am raising my two children Phoebe and Finn with my husband in Sonoma Valley. \nWWW.ALEXCOLESTUDIO.COM \nalex@alexcolestudio.com \n707.292.8399 \nALEXCOLESTUDIO • INSTAGRAM • FACEBOOK

SUMMARY:HIGH COUNTRY with Julia Schwadron
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time again and we are welcoming Julia Schwadron on August 13th. Her work will stay with us through Saturday\, October 20th when we will hold a closing Artist’s Reception from 3-5 pm. \nHIGH COUNTRY \nThe surface of a painting is a place to mine\, to dig\, to add\, and to subtract from in the hopes of arriving at an image that is yet unknown. \n \nIn my recent paintings\, I’ve been using still life objects from my immediate natural environment as starting points for abstraction. Five years ago\, I relocated from New York City\, to South Lake Tahoe\, CA – landscapes to be considered as polar opposites. This new series of work\, titled\, “High Country\,” is evolving out of my exploration of this new topography\, the new air and light\, and the experience of living in the mountains as a contemporary artist and thinker. \nFor several years\, I’ve used language as a visual code for thought that goes beyond standard comprehension to become meaningful as an image as well as text. The basic questions that have always driven my art making beg the conventional notions of internal vs. external landscapes. I am trying to find a way to blur these boundaries and create layers that more closely resemble the complicated ways we experience the world. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Spotlight Series: Tilted Shed Cider
DESCRIPTION:Come meet\, chat\, and sip with a bunch of our favorite local winemakers and brewers this spring and summer. There are no tickets\, no prix-fixe\, and everything is poured by the glass and half-glass\, so you can stop by for a drink and a snack\, or go all out with a sampling of our small plates and pairings.\n\n\n  \nAt its core\, Tilted Shed Ciderworks is a hobby gone wild. The trouble started in 2007. We were living on a small farm in Northern New Mexico\, trying our hand at organic market farming while freelancing and raising our baby. On our land was an old\, gnarled\, neglected apple orchard. \nBeing a bit of a mad scientist with a fermentation habit\, Scott decided that our bumper crop of Jonathans\, Goldens\, and Red Delicious would make good drink. \n \nSo\, with our infant son in one arm\, Ellen lobbed apples into the hopper of our barrel press\, while Scott cranked and pressed. Scott then put up the juice in the barn for a long\, slow fermentation. A few months later\, we were amazed with the results. Inspired\, we began tasting regional ciders made from European and American cider apples. \nAn obsession began. \n  \n  \n  \n\nMake your reservations for August 11th\nby calling us at (707) 528-7100\nor by clicking here.\n

SUMMARY:Highway 101 in the Neighborhood: Memories Across Fractured Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Santa Rosa Arts Center at Chroma Gallery \n312 South A Street\, Santa Rosa \nco-sponsored by the \nAnthropology Dept./Sonoma State University \n\nJuly 13 – 27 2018 \nReception and SOFA Block Party\nSunday\, July 22  11am-2pm\n \nCurrent and former residents of our neighborhood are invited to a SOFA block party in the back yard at 312 South A Street. \nThe construction of the 101 Freew \n  \nay between the late 1940s and mid 1960s radically transformed Santa Rosa’s landscape. This exhibit uses the original 1940s Caltrans survey documents\, black and white photographs and survey maps that detail the pathway through the neighborhood that used to unite South Davis and South A streets–a richly diverse immigrant community that included small shops\, a park\, a school and a church\, along with a wide array of homes. \nThere will be a reception and block party at the Santa Rosa Arts Center on July 22 bringing together former neighborhood residents dislocated by the highway construction and their family members\, with current residents of the vibrant SOFA (South of A) Arts District neighborhood. There will be an open gallery walk followed by story-telling and conversations by exhibit visitors sharing memories and stories about neighborhood places and people. \n“Highway 101 in the Neighborhood” complement and localizes “Landscape and Memories” the current Santa Rosa Art Center exhibit. The highway exhibit also shares materials with the “Lost Santa Rosa” exhibit at the Sonoma County History Museum.

There are no tickets\, no prix-fixe\, and everything is poured by the glass and half-glass\, so you can stop by for a drink and a snack\, or go all out with a sampling of our small plates and pairings.\n\nWe believe in our grapes and we don’t feel the need to inoculate our fermentation with selected yeast or feed them with inorganic nutrients or overprotect them with large amounts of sulfur dioxide. We also believe that blending enhances a wine’s balance and complexity which is why we planted grapes that have historically worked well together. This gives us the flexibility to adapt to a vintage’s characteristics and deliver compelling wines year after year. \nWe are certified organic\, and we believe in keeping the microflora and microfauna in our soils as well as our beneficial insects alive and striving. Roots and leaves need allies; they cannot do it alone in a sustainable way. We are not just growing plants; we are also supporting a whole ecosystem\, and this takes time\, experience\, and dedication. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nMake your reservations for JUNE 29TH\nby calling us at (707) 528-7100\nor by clicking here.\n

SUMMARY:Spring Spotlight Series: MARTHA STOUMEN
DESCRIPTION:Come meet\, chat\, and sip with a bunch of our favorite local winemakers (and one brewer!) this spring and summer. There are no tickets\, no prix-fixe\, and everything is poured by the glass and half-glass\, so you can stop by for a drink and a snack\, or go all out with a sampling of our small plates and pairings.\n\n  \nMartha Stoumen Wines was founded upon the desire to recapture a farming and winemaking culture that has all but faded away: a winemaking culture of patience. \nFor my wines I lease and farm around half of the vineyards myself. The other half are farmed by multi-generation farmers who understand their land\, and their family’s land\, far better than I ever will\, and who farm with my same philosophies in mind. Patience in the vineyard means composting rather than adding synthetic fertilizers\, allowing predatory insects the ability to outcompete pests rather than spraying insecticides\, and doing proper handwork\, such as pruning for vine longevity rather than high yields. \nIn the cellar I use a minimalist winemaking approach. Patience in the cellar means letting the natural yeast and bacteria present on the grape skins perform fermentation\, and allowing longer macerations and aging to provide stability rather than using added tannin\, acid\, or stabilizing agents in my wines. SUMMARY:Sara Downing JOY 2.0
DESCRIPTION:Artist Reception Tuesday\, June 5th 5-7 PM\n \nSara Downing is a self taught American photographic artist. With visual artist parents\, her work often reflects painterly and abstract forms. Much of Sara’s work over the last decade has been steeped in landscapes\, portraiture and architecture. Her full-time artistic career began only recently\, after Sara’s first large solo show at the Barlow in nearby Sebastopol in 2017. With the tremendous success of that first show\, and a desire to finally answer a call she found impossible to ignore\, she made the leap to quit her job and started her own business. That first show was\, in her words; \n\n-cathartic at best\, I wanted to show many different facets on what brings me joy. This first exhibit was an\nopportunity to show the breadth of that joy with freedom from a rigid theme. \n\nWith this next exhibit however\, Downing travels deeper into one facet of her interest. focusing primarily on small\, textural microcosms distilled from the often-labeled mundane. With intricate shadows and angular perspectives\, Downing reveals the unexpected artistry and grace of a world hidden in plain sight. \n \nClick HERE to make reservations online or give us a call at 707 – 528 – 7100

SUMMARY:Spring Spotlight Series: UNTI VINEYARDS
DESCRIPTION:Come meet\, chat\, and sip with a bunch of our favorite local winemakers (and one brewer!) this spring and summer. There are no tickets\, no prix-fixe\, and everything is poured by the glass and half-glass\, so you can stop by for a drink and a snack\, or go all out with a sampling of our small plates and pairings.\n\n\nUnti Vineyards is a small\, family-owned and operated winery specializing in Mediterranean varietal wines with vineyard personality. The winery\, established in 1997\, produces small lots of estate grown Barbera\, Grenache\, Montepulciano\, Sangiovese\, Syrah and Zinfandel. We also produce a dry Rose from Grenache and Mourvedre and a White Blend of Vermentino\, Grenache Blanc and Picpoul. We use artisan wine making methods to enhance and support our ability to make wines with a sense of place-such as fermenting and aging 45 to 60 different small batches of wine each year\, using whole clusters in our Rhone varietal ferments\, using a variety of fermenting and aging vessels including stainless steel\, concrete tanks\, large french oak ovals and small french oak barrels. \nAs obsessive wine fanatics\, we believe the worlds best wine grapes come from vineyards where the vines are naturally adapted to their environment. This includes planting several varieties that heretofore have not been grown in the Dry Creek Valley\, but are prominently planted in Southern Europe. We have been farming our vineyards organically since 2003\, in an attempt to facilitate self sustaining vines without the use of herbicides and pesticides. We also apply organic compost according to the list of soil preparations prescribed by Rudolf Steiner. \n\nMake your reservations for JUNE 1ST\nby calling us at (707) 528-7100\nor by clicking here.\n

SUMMARY:An Evening with Author Isaac Butler
DESCRIPTION:On May 8\, join Isaac Butler\, author of “The World Only Spins Forward” for a book reading at The Astro! The book is a riveting\, inspiring (and often very funny) oral history of the ascent of Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America\,” drawing from over 250 interviews with artists involved with what is widely considered one of the most important works in the American Theatre. This event is not one to be missed. Seating is limited so please head on over to our page or Eventbrite page and register. The event will be free of charge and refreshments will be available.\nBooks will also be available for sale on premise at the time of the event. \n\n  \nThe oral history of Angels in America\, as told by the artists who created it and the audiences forever changed by it–a moving account of the AIDS era\, essential queer history\, and an exuberant backstage tale. \nWhen Tony Kushner’s Angels in America hit Broadway in 1993\, it won the Pulitzer Prize\, swept the Tonys\, launched a score of major careers\, and changed the way gay lives were represented in popular culture. Mike Nichols’s 2003 HBO adaptation starring Meryl Streep\, Al Pacino\, and Mary-Louise Parker was itself a tour de force\, winning Golden Globes and eleven Emmys\, and introducing the play to an even wider public. This generation-defining classic continues to shock\, move\, and inspire viewers worldwide. \nNow\, on the 25th anniversary of that Broadway premiere\, Isaac Butler and Dan Kois offer the definitive account of Angels in America in the most fitting way possible: through oral history\, the vibrant conversation and debate of actors (including Streep\, Parker\, Nathan Lane\, and Jeffrey Wright)\, directors\, producers\, crew\, and Kushner himself. Their intimate storytelling reveals the on- and offstage turmoil of the play’s birth–a hard-won miracle beset by artistic roadblocks\, technical disasters\, and disputes both legal and creative. And historians and critics help to situate the play in the arc of American culture\, from the staunch activism of the AIDS crisis through civil rights triumphs to our current era\, whose politics are a dark echo of the Reagan ’80s. \nExpanded from a popular Slate cover story and built from nearly 250 interviews\, The World Only Spins Forward is both a rollicking theater saga and an uplifting testament to one of the great works of American art of the past century\, from its gritty San Francisco premiere to its starry\, much-anticipated Broadway revival in 2018. \nDan Kois is an editor and writer for Slate‘s culture section and a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine. He’s the former culture editor at Slate\, where he launched the Slate Book Review. He previously co-hosted the podcast Mom and Dad Are Fighting and is a frequent guest on Slate‘s Culture Gabfest. His previous book was Facing Future\, about the Hawaiian musician Israel Kamakawiwo’ole\, for Bloomsbury’s 33 1/3 series\, and his next book is How to Be a Family\, a memoir of parenting around the world. \nIsaac Butler is a writer and theater director\, most recently of The Trump Card\, a meditation on the peculiar rise of Donald Trump with the solo performer Mike Daisey. Butler also wrote and directed Real Enemies\, a collaboration with the composer Darcy James Argue and the video artist Peter Nigrini\, which was commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music and named one of the top ten live events of 2015 by the New York Times. He holds an MFA in creative nonfiction from the University of Minnesota\, and his writing has appeared in the Guardian\, Slate\, American Theatre\, the Los Angeles Review of Books\, and other publications. He lives in Brooklyn. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Spotlight Series: May 4th - SHADY OAK BARREL HOUSE
DESCRIPTION:Come meet\, chat\, and sip with a bunch of our favorite local winemakers (and one brewer!) this spring and summer. There are no tickets\, no prix-fixe\, and everything is poured by the glass and half-glass\, so you can stop by for a drink and a snack\, or go all out with a sampling of our small plates and pairings.\n\nShady Oak Barrel House is our only beer brewer in the Spotlight this spring\, Steve Doty\, is making some incredibly delicious\, complex\, food-friendly sour beer in Santa Rosa. \n“My main focus will be on beers made with the wild yeast\, Brettanomyces\, as well as other bacteria that are used to bring acidity to a beer.  The aromatics from these beers create a delightful earthy and funky bouquet\, that no traditional yeast ever could.  Most of these will demand a long maturation process in wood barrels\, to create a complex sour beer.  The majority of production is packaged in bottles where it undergoes another fermentation to create another layer of complexity.  Other offerings will utilize unique hop varietals\, and even include the natural bounty of fruits and herbs from Sonoma County.  These are the beers that I cannot get enough of\, and thus will be making an ever changing lineup of different offerings.” \n  \n\nMake your reservations for MAY 4TH\nby calling us at (707) 528-7100\nor by clicking here.\n

SUMMARY:Spotlight Series: April 27th - CAMPOVIDA
DESCRIPTION:The Spinster Sisters are thrilled to announce the lineup for our Spring 2018 Spotlight Series!\nWe’re having some friends over to pour for you this spring. Come meet\, chat\, and sip with a few of our favorite local winemakers! No tickets\, no prix-fixe\, and everything is poured by the glass and half-glass\, so you can stop by for a drink and a snack\, or go all out with a sampling of our small plates and pairings.\nMark these Friday nights on your calendar and give us a call for reservations!\n\n \n“If there were a phrase that would define Campovida’s winemaking program\, it would be ‘without compromise’. The primary goal of this program is to craft world-class wines grown exclusively in Mendocino County\, so we put special attention to the growers we partner with because as we all know\, it all starts in the vineyard. Quality and not quantity is the key ingredient as our lots range from 50 to 300 cases\, allowing the winemaking team to truly focus on each individual lot with care.\nCampovida’s winemaking program focuses on showcasing Mendocino County fruit exclusively. We source our grapes from different sub appellations within Mendocino County such as Yorkville Highlands\, Redwood Valley\, Potter Valley and Mendocino AVA. We search for specific grape varietals that excel at each particular appellation and terroir\, giving us flexibility in the amount of wines that we can produce.” \n\nMake your reservations for APRIL 27TH\nby calling us at (707) 528-7100\nor by clicking here.\n

SUMMARY:Andrea Kendall - Artist Reception April 10th 5-7pm
DESCRIPTION:Andrea Kendall\n“The process of painting excites me as a visual recording of experience\, where layers of the process are not all apparent\, but influence the final result just as much as that which is obvious. This allows the viewer to bring their own interpretations and history to the work\, broadening the picture beyond the frame. \n \nI work with oil paint in reactive and unplanned approach\, using methods such as pouring\, spraying and blow-drying to create the composition. My process is driven by the interaction of layers as they build and the visual history that is recorded\, disguised\, re-revealed and merged to create the final result. \nRecent work includes oil on wood panel and oil on canvas with embroidery elements. The work is composed of atmospheric and organic forms but are altogether abstract\, creating a dialog with the viewer that is entirely subjective.” \n \nAndrea Kendall graduated from UC Davis with a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art in 2001. She lives in Sonoma County. \n  \n  \n\nAn Artist’s reception will be held at The Spinster Sisters on April 10th from 5 to 7 pm.\n

SUMMARY:Spotlight Series: March 30th - RYME CELLARS
DESCRIPTION:The Spinster Sisters are thrilled to announce the lineup for our Spring 2018 Spotlight Series! We’re having some friends over to pour for you this spring. Come meet\, chat\, and sip with a few of our favorite local winemakers! No tickets\, no prix-fixe\, and everything is poured by the glass and half-glass\, so you can stop by for a drink and a snack\, or go all out with a sampling of our small plates and pairings.\nMark these Friday nights on your calendar and give us a call for reservations!\n\n\nRyme Cellars is a collaboration of husband and wife with old world sensibilities\, as well as admiration for California’s terroir and sunny disposition. Our portfolio of wines has grown gradually and organically since 2007\, beginning with a single ton of Aglianico. The varieties may be rare or unusual but none of them are a mere curiosity for us. Rather\, they represent wines that we love\, drink often\, and truly believe in the potential for success in their chosen sites. \nWe love wines with distinctive character. They should taste great on their own\, but really shine alongside good food. We love wines with ample tannin and acidity\, especially if they are expected to age. We always value a great wine’s idiosyncrasies over a polished supple sameness that is so common in the wine world. \n We are not driven by any theme necessarily. Most of our wines are made from Italian varieties simply because of the great diversity and unique character of the wines of that culture. While Cabernet\, Pinot Noir\, and Chardonnay have certainly excelled here in California\, the supremacy of the so-called “noble” varieties is not absolute. They need not be the only game in town. We don’t believe they are the most noble\, only the most popular. \nOur wines come from conscientiously farmed organic or sustainable vineyards. They are produced according to simple methods. The wines are always encouraged\, never controlled. We use no cultured yeast\, no temperature control\, no enzymes or other adulterants. We do not fine or filter. The wines are raised in used French oak barriques between 2 and 10 years old. Many of the reds are fermented on the stems. Many of the whites are fermented on the skins. \nFrom time to time\, we have different interpretations of a wine’s true identity\, in which case\, we will maintain separate projects. Such is the case with the “His” and “Hers” Vermentino. “Hers” pressed\, settled clean\, and bottled early. “His” picked later\, destemmed\, fermented on skins\, and aged longer. \n\nMake your reservations for MARCH 30TH\nby calling us at (707) 528-7100\nor by clicking here.\n

DESCRIPTION:The Spinster Sisters are thrilled to announce the lineup for our Spring 2018 Spotlight Series! We’re having some friends over to pour for you this spring. William often jokes there aren’t two shepherds\, but actually half shepherd\, as in addition to making a multitude of small lots\, doing all production\, he has a full time “day job” that funds the winery and its growth. \nIn 2015 William was joined by his partner Karen Daenen\, a wine industry veteran\, and head of consumer research for a multi-brand winery\, as they moved into their own production facility in Windsor. \nTwo Shepherds specializes in Rhone varieties (e.g. Grenache Blanc\, Mourvèdre\, Roussanne\,) from cool climate vineyards and unique plantings\, made with minimal intervention. Use of native yeast\, no additions other than minimal S02\, neutral barrel fermentation and aging\, whole cluster\, and unfined\, unfiltered production are core philosophies of Two Shepherds. \nTwo Shepherds was named as a Top Ten Hot Brand by Wine Business Monthly in 2012\, and profiled in Jon Bonné’s book\, The New California Wine: A Guide to the Producers and Wines Behind a Revolution in Taste. In 2017 Two Shepherds was also featured in a 66 page book by the San Francisco Chronicle as top 50 wineries to visit in Napa & Sonoma\, as well as cover photo for Sonoma Syrah article\, and dubbed 2017 San Francisco Chronicle: Rhone Style Rockstars \n  \n\nMake your reservations for MARCH 9TH\nby calling us at (707) 528-7100\nor by clicking here.\n
